Dr. Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has been working as a Project Director, IDB funded ongoing project Agricultural Support for Smallholders in south-Western Region of Bangladesh since 5, September,2013. Before that he had worked as Horticulture Specialist in Kustia district, Subject Matter Specialist (ICT, MIS & HRD) in DANIDA funded project Agricultural Extension Component(AEC), Technical Officer of FAO funded projects Livelihood Adaptation to Climate Change(LACC-1) and Disaster Risk Management in Agriculture (DRMA), Assistant Director (IPM) of DANIDA funded project the Strengthening Plant Protection Services (Phase-II). Earlier that he served in different posts under Upazila level and in Field services Wing of DAE.
He began his career as a Scientific officer in Soil Chemistry Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute(BRRI), Joydebpur,Gazipur in 1986. On the 1st April, 1987 he Joined in B.C.S. (Agriculture) Cadre Service in Bochagonj Upazila Agricultural Office as Subject Matter Officer (SMO) under the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) through qualifying the competitive B.C.S. Examination, 1985.
He passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Thakurgaon Govt. Boys High School in 1976 and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) from Thakurgaon Govt. College in 1978. He obtained B.Sc.Ag.(Hons.) degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh in 1985.
He obtained M.S. in Agricultural Extension Education from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur In 1994. The title of his M.S. thesis was 'Women's Participation in Selected Agricultural Income Generating Activities Under Rural Development Programme of BRAC at Shibpur Thana in Narsinghdi District'.
He was awarded a Doctoral Scholarship in 1995 from World Bank and DFID funded the then Agricultural Support Service Project (ASSP), Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and obtained Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Extension Education from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU),Mymensingh in 2000. The title of his doctoral thesis was 'Farmers' Perception of the Harmful Effects of Using Agro-chemicals in Crop Production with Regard to Environmental Pollution.'
Dr. Islam was awarded a fellowship by the Royal Thai Government to attend in an annual international training course entitled Agricultural Resources Management in Chiang Mai, Thailand from July 1- July 31, 2002. He was also awarded a fellowship by the Royal Danish Government to attend in a Training Management Course in Denmark from 1 November, 2004 to 14 January, 2005.
Dr. Islam is a thesis examiner and thesis supervisor of Agricultural Extension Education Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. He had examined many M.S. theses and supervised 3 M.S. students of Agricultural Extension Education Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University(BAU),Mymensingh.
He had published 12 publications in national and international scientific journals and in workshop proceeding in his credit. He had also published many popular articles in Krishikatha and agricultural extension bulletins. He published Jointly 2 books on Bigganvittik Dhan Chash and Shiter Sabjee in the year 2012.
Dr. Islam is associated with different professional Societies. He is a life member of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh(KIB), Bangladesh Agricultural Extension Society (BAES), Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. He is also a member of Bangladesh Civil Service (Agriculture) Association , Bangladesh Association for Environmental Development, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science(BAAS), Society of Agricultural and Environmental Chemists(SAEC), BCS 85 forum, Bangladesh Agriculture Extension Network(BAEN), etc.
